To live with his/her family in Japan, a foreigner need to fulfill requirements of at least one of the "Status of Residence" defined by the Japanese immigration laws. The following status are often considered as family visa because their requirements relate to applicant's family position, relationship, etc.
"Spouse or Child of Japanese national" 「日本人の配偶者等」 is possible status under which a foreigner can live with his/her family together in Japan for a long period.
- Husband of Japanese
- Wife of Japanese
- Child of Japanese
might be eligible for "Spouse or Child of Japanese National".
"Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" 「永住者の配偶者等」 is possible status under which a foreigner can live with his/her family together in Japan for a long period.
- Husband of Permanent Resident
- Wife of Permanent Resident
- Child of Permanent Resident
might be eligible for "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident".
"Dependent" 「家族滞在」 is possible status under which a foreigner can live with his/her family together in Japan for a long period.
- Husband of non-Permanent Resident
- Wife of non-Permanent Resident
- Child of non-Permanent Resident
might be eligible for "Dependent".
"Long Term Resident" 「定住者」 is sometimes considered as family visa. Definition of "Long Term Resident" is "Those who are authorized to reside in Japan with a designation of period of stay by the Minister of Justice in consideration of special circumstances." Circumstances largely vary.
Permanent Resident 「永住者」 and Special Permanent Resident 「特別永住者」 are also considered as family related visa since many of their families reside in Japan. Permanent Residency status can be granted in Japan, not out side of Japan, that is, a foreigner need to spend some period under other status prior to its application.
Under the status of "Temporary Visitor", a foreigner can temporarily visit Japan to see his/her family in Japan.
Employment related status such as "Engineer", "Artist", etc also make a foreigner stay legally in Japan, that is, he/she can live with his/her family together.
